Moving from DrChrono to Weft
Migrating from DrChrono: request the EHI export, then import clients, diagnoses and appointments into Weft from a JSON file.
Who this is for: Practice administrator
DrChrono's own export is the right place to start, because it is a complete copy of your records. Weft reads clients, diagnoses and appointments for this system from one JSON file.
Request your export from DrChrono
Do this in DrChrono. A practice-wide export can take up to 14 business days and is held for 30 days once it is ready.
- In DrChrono, go to Account, then Staff Permissions, open the Provider / Staff tab and choose View, then Edit Permission. Turn on the EHI Export permission for the person who will run the export, and save.
- Open the Reports menu and choose EHI Data Export.
- Select New Export Request, then choose the option that covers every client for a practice-wide export.
- Select Request, then Start, and complete the form DrChrono shows: your practice contact, DrChrono username, Doctor ID, Practice Group ID and the reason for the export.
- When the export is complete, DrChrono sends a notification to the Message Center with a link to the EHI dashboard. Download the export from there within 30 days.
Note: DrChrono's export is a ZIP file of CSV files. Weft does not read that ZIP as it is yet; see What to send us below.
Note: Checked on 28 October 2026 against DrChrono's help articles "EHI Export: Overview", "Creating a New Request : EHI Export" and "EHI Export FAQ".
What to send us, and how to upload it
Weft reads DrChrono from one JSON file of up to 25 MB that holds DrChrono's CSV tables for clients, problems, appointments and doctors. No DrChrono export produces that file directly, and DrChrono's own export is a ZIP of CSV files that Weft does not read as it is. Contact Weft at support@weftary.com with your DrChrono export before you upload.
- Select Settings, then Import records.
- Under Source, choose DrChrono. Under it, How to export from DrChrono opens this guide again whenever you need it.
- Select Choose file and pick the JSON file. Weft checks the type and size before anything is sent.
- Select Upload this export. The export appears under Import history while it is read.
What comes across and what does not
Clients arrive with a name and date of birth, diagnoses with their ICD-10, ICD-9 or SNOMED CT codes where DrChrono states them, and appointments with their time, length, status, reason and clinician. Appointment fields are read from DrChrono's published documentation and have not been confirmed against a live export, so check the appointments in the preview before you bring them in.
Important: Notes, billing, documents, messages and everything else in your DrChrono export stay in the export. Keep it as your own copy.
Note: A client keeps DrChrono's chart number, so a later file from the same system recognises the clients already brought across.
Check it afterwards
- Open the export from Import history. What was found counts what was read, by kind of record.
- If there are rows under Still to answer, answer each one: open the client Weft thinks it is, or choose Bring in as a new client.
- Read Records this practice's record would not take. Each row says why it was refused, and the rest of the export is unaffected.
- When the counts look right, select Bring this export in. Nothing is written to your records until you do.

Common questions
What if Weft refuses the file?
The screen tells you why and nothing is saved. A file of the wrong type or over the size limit is refused before it is sent. A file that is not the export for the system you chose is refused after it is sent, so check that Source matches the file, then upload again.
Can I import a second file from DrChrono?
Yes. Clients already brought across are recognised by their DrChrono chart number rather than duplicated.
