Moving from SimplePractice to Weft
Migrating from SimplePractice: export the Client details and Client demographics reports, upload them as one ZIP file and import your client list into Weft.
Who this is for: Practice administrator
Weft brings your client list across from two SimplePractice reports. The account data export is a different download and is not what Weft reads, so you do not need it for this.
Export the two reports from SimplePractice
Do this in SimplePractice, as the Account Owner or a team member who can see these reports. Both reports must cover the same clients, so leave the filters the same on each, and filter neither to fewer clients than you want to bring across.
- In SimplePractice, select Analytics from the left menu, then the Reports tab.
- Open the Client details report.
- Select Export, then CSV. If you see Manage report instead of Export, select Manage report, then Download CSV. Weft reads CSV, so do not choose the Excel option.
- Go back to Reports and open the Client demographics report, then export it as a CSV the same way.
Note: The Client demographics report is only available on SimplePractice's Essential and Plus plans. Without it you can still bring the client list across, but your clients arrive with no date of birth.
Note: Reports from the Report exports tab are available to download until noon the next business day, so download them when they are ready.
Note: Checked on 28 October 2026 against SimplePractice's help articles "Understanding your clients and appointments reports", "Exporting your reports" and "Exporting client information through data exports".
Put the file together and upload it
Weft takes one ZIP file. Put both CSV files in a single folder, compress the folder into one ZIP file, and keep it under 25 MB.
- Select Settings, then Import records.
- Under Source, choose SimplePractice. Under it, How to export from SimplePractice opens this guide again whenever you need it.
- Select Choose file and pick your ZIP file. Weft checks the type and size before anything is sent.
- Select Upload this export. The export appears under Import history while it is read.
What comes across and what does not
Each client arrives with a name and, where the demographics report was included, a date of birth. The two reports share no client number, so Weft lines them up by the client's name and holds every client for you to answer before anything is written.
Important: Only clients come across from SimplePractice today. Appointments, notes, billing, documents and messages stay in SimplePractice, so keep your account data export and your SimplePractice access until you no longer need them.
Note: Addresses, phone numbers, email, insurance and the other demographic columns are read so you can see them in the preview, but they are not written to the client's record. Add them to a client after the import.
Note: If you keep two clients under one name, check them in the preview: Weft will not join a date of birth to a name that appears more than once in a report.
Check it afterwards
- Open the export from Import history. What was found counts what was read, by kind of record.
- If there are rows under Still to answer, answer each one: open the client Weft thinks it is, or choose Bring in as a new client.
- Read Records this practice's record would not take. Each row says why it was refused, and the rest of the export is unaffected.
- When the counts look right, select Bring this export in. Nothing is written to your records until you do.

Common questions
What if Weft refuses the file?
The screen tells you why and nothing is saved. A file of the wrong type or over the size limit is refused before it is sent. A file that is not the export for the system you chose is refused after it is sent, so check that Source matches the file, then upload again.
Can I import more than once?
Yes, but check the system's guide first: some systems can only be brought across once. Read the repeat section of Importing your records.
Do I need the account data export?
No. It is a different download of documents and notes filed by client, and Weft does not read it. It is worth keeping as your own copy.
