Bill the second insurance

Bill a client's other payer after the first has answered, with the first payer's payment and adjustments carried onto the claim.

Who this is for: Biller, Practice manager, Practice administrator

When a client holds more than one policy, the first payer is billed first and the next payer is billed for what is left. This is the ninth stage of insurance from start to finish.

Know the order

  1. On each policy, Which payer is asked first sets the order: Asked first, Asked second or Asked third.
  2. Select Ask about other coverage to see which payer the plans say pays first, and where each plan pays.
The other coverage panel after the payers answered.

Bill the next payer

  1. Wait until the first payer's claim is decided and its payment posted.
  2. Open the first claim and select Bill the next payer. A draft claim for the second policy is saved.
  3. Read The earlier payer's adjudication: what was Charged, what They paid, what was Adjusted and anything Unaccounted for.
  4. Correct, check and send the draft as you would any claim.

Note: If the payer passed the claim on itself, the ERA shows Passed on, and you do not bill the next payer.
